Topic: Toy News - Japanese firm recalls 230000 Chinese toys: official - AFP

Filed under: Toy News — admin @ 7:09 pm

TOKYO (AFP) — A Japanese importer is recalling 230,000 toys made in China due to excessive levels of toxic substances, an official said Wednesday, the latest in a wave of global recalls of Chinese goods. The recall, which began on Tuesday, covers toys that were sold from 2004 up to the beginning of December this year, an official of Marushin Toys said. According to the website of Japan’s Toy Association, the importer slapped fake safety labels on 16 items without the necessary authorisation or inspections. Chinese-made products ranging from seafood to car tires have been targeted in a spate of overseas safety recalls this year, with toys in the spotlight in recent months. More Toy News

Top 10 Kids Toys

Top 10 Kids Toys

When I was young, I was a tomboy. I played with the other boys in the street in games like soccer and cricket. I wasn’t remotely interested in dolls or anything girly. I didn’t want to do skipping games, in fact everything the girls in the neighborhood did looked very boring. My toys were also of the tomboy persuasion and I had 10 toys which I played with the most.

Rainy days were often spent inside with my fort. It was a well built fort with look out posts. The cavalry soldiers guarded it against the Indian invaders. It was probably the best of my favorite 10 toys. I also had a farm, which had pigs, horses, sheep and cattle. There was a big tree and a well. I made the farmer and his wife work very hard, milking the cows and driving the animals to market.

I also had racing cars which were a bit beat up but I loved them anyway. I gave each one the name of a racing driver, so there was Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Allan Clarke and Graham Hill. A list of favorite 10 toys has got to have cars in it. My train set was another beloved toy. The locomotive was a big, black one and it pulled several freight cars. There was a ticket office and people standing on the platform. Sometimes I put the budgie in one of the freight trucks and took him slowly round the track. He seemed to like it.

Westerns and cowboys were an obsession of mine. I loved TV series like Gunsmoke and Wagon Train, so I liked to put on my cowboy suit. It had a cowboy hat, waistcoat and six shooter in a holster. After seeing The Magnificent Seven, I pretended to be Steve McQueen and practiced my fast draw endlessly. The 10 toys I mostly played with would always include it. Another much used toy was my spinning top. I spun the top with the suede whip and tried to spin it as fast as possible.

I got to be quite adept at the yo-yo, after ages of practice. I would take it to school and show off to my buddies. Once I’d got into my rhythm, I could go on for a long time. A roll call of 10 toys today would not include one as they’ve gone out of fashion, which is a shame.

When I was a kid, there were few TV channels and computer games hadn’t been invented, so the 10 toys which occupied my time were very important to me. I liked to play with my swing ball, even though it could be frustrating sometimes. Marbles are another toy that have fallen out of favor. I used to play with those a lot and took them to school for recess. Finally, I had a boomerang which actually worked. I’d stand in the street, throw it and by some miracle, it always came back. So there we are. 10 toys to beat a computer game, any day.

MARSHALL LOEB'S DAILY MONEY TIP Make sure the toys you buy are safe - MarketWatch- Toy News

Filed under: Toy News — admin @ 2:54 am

If you’re at a loss what to buy for your kids for the holidays, making sure your gifts are safe and lead-free at least will save you both time and worry. Since most toys are made of plastic, familiarizing yourself with the basic characteristics of the different types of plastics would help you avoid the hazardous ones from the start. According to Cookie magazine, toys made of plastics #2, #4 and #5 are the safest, longest-lasting items, while those made of #3, #6 and #7 tend to break down easily and expose kids to potentially harmful chemicals. You can tell which type of plastic a toy is made of by turning it over and looking at the bottom, where the symbol is usually stamped. If you can’t find this information on the toy or on its package try calling the manufacturer or visiting the company’s Web site for more information. If you feel like going the extra mile, consider buying toys made in Germany (look for the “GS” safety mark) and other European countries, which often have higher safety standards than the U. Noisy toys can damage a child's hearing: experts - CTV.ca(Toy News)

Filed under: Toy News — admin @ 2:49 am

Hearing experts are warning that many of the toys that kids are playing with are just too loud because regulations on noise limits are not tough enough. The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) held a news conference Monday to urge the federal government to amend current legislation and lower the maximum noise levels allowed in toys. It says that limit does not take into account how closely children may hold a toy to their ears and how sensitive children’s hearing is to noise. CASLPA says the prime minister addressed toy safety in his Speech from the Throne earlier this fall and they want noise levels in toys to be considered an equally important part of this issue. The Hearing Foundation of Canada notes toy manufacturers are not required to label toys with the decibel level emission and it is their responsibility to ensure toys are safe. They say if parents are concerned that a toy is too loud, they can test it with a sound meter, or they can take their concerns to Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety offices. More Toy News

Toy News - The toys have sold out at Wal-Mart, and there aren't many left at … - Dallas Morning News

Filed under: Toy News — admin @ 5:49 am

The toys have sold out at Wal-Mart, and there aren’t many left at Target. The toy company’s press release says there “were doubters who wondered if a 12-inch tall talking Jesus doll that speaks Bible stories and scripture would sell well. We knew that the toys would make great Christmas gifts, but to see them sell so well before the Christmas buying season begins proves that parents want alternatives in the toy aisle. Knowing how quickly kids can tire of their toys, he could end up buried in a toy chest with Power Rangers, Batman and Ninja Turtles – and there’s something unsettling about that.

(Toy News) Avoiding 25 Million Dangerous Toys - ABC News

Filed under: Toy News — admin @ 5:47 am

Avoiding 25 Million Dangerous ToysThe government warns that further recalls are under way, which is a sign that dangerous toys are still on shelves. For Arlene and Robert Gilmore, lead paint, dangerous magnets and toxic chemicals have changed the way they shop for their grandchildren’s presents this year. Kinder Haus Toys owner Sue Pyatt said, “We do get questions such as, ‘What have you here in your store that is not made in China? Despite efforts by individual store owners and the continuing stream of recalls, the toy industry says shoppers are not avoiding the 80 percent of toys made in China. Consumer expert Mays concedes that parents have ample reason to be confused and overwhelmed by toy shopping this year but says there are ways consumers can significantly reduce the risk of buying dangerous toys. Situation leaves Toys for Tots running short - Boston Globe(Toy News)

Situation leaves Toys for Tots running short

Earl Blount, a volunteer toy sorter for Toys for Tots in Boston, had little to do but hope for more donations. Toys for Tots, a foundation run by the US Marines that provides new toys to needy children, is facing a shortage this year in the aftermath of massive toy recalls and a growing demand from area families. The charity has had to discard hundreds of donated toys because they appeared on recall lists, and a local company providing free lead testing on the donated gifts discovered additional toys that contained lead, according to US Marine Corps Sergeant Daniel Peter Sampson, one of the local coordinators. The recalls have changed the landscape of the toy business, with nervous parents cutting their toy spending and opting to shop in specialty stores for toys made in the United States and Europe. Last year, Toys for Tots gave out 200,000 toys to 69,000 families in the greater Boston area. This year, the foundation has requests for more than 220,000 toys and with about two weeks left, only 60 percent of the orders are filled, Sampson said.
