I can not think of a single person who doesn’t like Winnie the Pooh toys. These play items for children bring back great memories for even the staunchest grown-up. Perhaps the appeal in the Winnie the Pooh toys is their association with great stories. The original stories were created for a specific little boy in mind. My daughter has now completed college and is planning her wedding. Her fiancé has developed a very close relationship with my brother-in-law. When my daughter opened them she began to cry. He had contracted with a doll maker to paint my daughter and her fiancé‘s likeness onto the faces of a bride and a groom doll. He had taken a copy of their engagement photo into the doll maker. All the women at the shower agreed that they had never seen such a wonderful gift.

Cabbage Patch Dolls were the biggest things around back when I was a kid. Back in the 1980’s, I was just a little kid, the oldest of three girls. We always had a lot of toys, many of which my grandmother would pick up second hand at yard sales in the city. I remember a couple of toys that we didn’t get though - toys that occupied my mind and fantasy world, and that I would have given my right arm to possess. The most coveted toys of all, for just about any kid at that time, would have to be the Cabbage Patch Kids.

How these toys mannered to capture the attention of millions of children the world over, I’ll never know. They weren’t even particularly cute, with their molded plastic heads, unmoving eyes and hair of yarn. And yet, somehow these Cabbage Patch dolls held the key to the hearts of kids around the globe.

I think part of the appeal of Cabbage Patch Kids had to be the adoption papers. Getting a doll that had already been pre-named was a pretty novel approach. However, it must have been more than mere dolly names that caused the hysteria surrounding Cabbage Patch Kids - especially at Christmastime. The crowds of shoppers went absolutely wild! There were even news reports of masses of people stampeding, trampling other shoppers, in the frenzy to get one of these Cabbage Patch dolls for an eager boy or girl waiting at home.

The marketing behind Cabbage Patch Kids was sheer genius. The world was held captive, enthralled, becoming willing pawns of marketing like never before. To this very day, I even remember the price of one of these Cabbage Patch dolls: an elusive $34.95, just out-of-grasp for our family to enjoy, as it would have been over $100 to send the three of us to cloud nine, out of sheer joy. This was simply money our family didn’t have.

I think our other grandmother took pity on us. She wanted to buy us the dolls, but between the three of us and countless cousins, she would have ended up spending thousands of dollars buying Cabbage Patch Dolls for all of us. So instead, she invested hours on end, painstakingly making dolls for us by hand. These dolls had hand painted faces, were anatomically correct (thanks to a few drinks we suspected), and were each clothed in beautiful handmade clothing.

Sadly, we were all pretty disappointed with this make-due attempt by our grandmother. Although we smiled bravely and put on a happy face, we were dying inside. These were not Cabbage Patch Kids at all! The other kids would laugh and know we were poor. This simply wouldn’t do!

In the end though, we came to love our dolls. As we grew older and reflected on our childhoods, we came to understand the real love that our grandmother put in to all of those dolls. Real thought and an exorbitant investment of time and effort. Many of my toys are long gone, but to this day my special doll sits on a shelf in my bedroom, as a testament to our grandmother’s love and a memory of the hysteria of the Cabbage Patch Kids era.

If you go to any department store today, you may well find Cabbage Patch Kids stocking the shelves. This comeback attempt has not even scraped the surface of the success of the original batch of Kids. I don’t know if the marketing is no longer as effective, or maybe the magic has simply been lost, but the Cabbage Patch Kids will always stir up fond memories in my family.

Anti Bratz Dolls

Bratz dolls must die! They must all be destroyed immediately. These may be very strong words but make no mistake - I mean them. I was unaware of these atrocious “toys” until recently when I was unfortunate enough to come across the Bratz television show one Saturday morning. I was appalled to say the least. I had to watch, at least for a minute or two, to make sure that I was seeing it correctly. I was.

Never have I seen something so disgusting as a cartoon aimed toward little girls that unabashedly glamorizes slutty behavior. That’s right - slutty. The prepubescent characters on the show, whose representations you can easily find in the toy department at any local store, dress and look like hookers. The clothes, the makeup and the attitudes of the characters should not be shown to little girls as something to look up to. In fact, these base representations of female characters are just about the last thing a girl in these modern times should be emulating. In a country where we used to stand up and speak out about women’s rights, I am ashamed that degrading images of girls such as these have made it to store shelves.

Bratz dolls are probably available at every Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target in this country. I find it ironic that Wal-Mart, a juggernaut that at times claims to be a family establishment, going so far as to ban certain adult-oriented publications from its shelves to keep young eyes from viewing them, would carry Bratz dolls. Anyone with two eyes and any level of intelligence can see that Bratz dolls look like glorified, underage prostitutes. What has happened to our society when we create such filth and then market it to our young children? Is anyone out there concerned with anything except profits?

As a woman, I am very insulted by the images portrayed by Bratz dolls and in the television show. I am insulted that people in this day and time would allow their young daughters to be subjected to these images. I feel sorry for the mother who feels the same way I do and has to explain herself to her daughter as they walk through the section of the toy department where the Bratz dolls are shelved. I feel sorry for any little girl who does not identify with the Bratz dolls but feels pressure from her friends to accept them.

Bratz dolls should not be seen as playthings for young children. At the very best, Bratz dolls are a sickening intersection of pedophilia and child’s toy. Bratz dolls are meant to look like young girls dressed and made up like grown and licentious women. They should be burned and banned and the makers of these disgusting “toys” should be ashamed of themselves.

If you are a parent who has allowed your child to watch the tv show or own any Bratz dolls, you might think about putting a stop to that as soon as possible. If you do not, you will one day have a child standing in front of you who is not at all how you wanted them to be and you will wonder why they have no respect for you or for themselves. Remember this. Every image you provide your child with leaves an impression that stays with them forever.

Kachina dolls, also known as katsinas, originated in what is now the southwestern United States. Authentic Kachina dolls are made only from the cottonwood root and are hand-carved representations of spirits in traditional Native American cultures.
