Imagination in the Toddler Years are Supported by Baby Dolls

When most baby girls hit about 18 months they begin to show great interest in babies. It is always so cute to see toddlers, only barely past infancy themselves pointing to and trying to care for other children they identify as a ‘bebe’. Most toddlers of this age and interest are provided with a baby doll of her own to love, in some cases many baby dolls.

Your toddler loves to hold and cuddle her baby. Why not foster that interest and imaginative play by adding the fun extras this Christmas? There are many different baby dolls to choose from. Everything from dolls that cry to dolls that wet their diaper after feeding them a baby bottle full of water.

Doll furniture is available in any shape or size you can imagine. There is no end to what you can find. If a real baby uses it, there is a replica made for her baby doll too.

Cribs for baby dolls come in all shapes, sizes and colors. It is so much more fun to shop for doll furniture to baby your baby’s baby than it was to pick it for yourself. A word of caution here: toddlers like to climb. Large upright or rocking varieties might need to be carefully considered. More basic models that are close to the floor will keep your toddler out of trouble.

When it comes to doll furniture cribs are only the tip of the iceberg. You will find high chairs, mobiles, swings, rocking chairs, car seats, bouncy seats and diaper changing tables. Just remember your child is likely to test them for her own baby, so make sure they are sturdy and safe in case your child climbs in too.

Strollers are very popular as the ‘little mommy’ can pretend she is taking her baby for a walk in the park or across the family room to the grocery store she has set up on her own little table and chairs she also got for Christmas or her first birthday.

If your little mommy likes to bathe her doll there are accessories for that too: miniature tubs, towels wash clothes and shampoo bottles. There are even some kinds of dolls that show clean or dirty spots depending on the water temperature your child uses to clean their faces.

Baby towels, washcloths and blankets are important to round out the imaginary story your little girl will have made up, as she plays out the day, including putting her baby to bed at night, complete with bedtime stories.

A diaper bag is a must have for baby care, even when your baby is a plastic doll. Toddlers love to do what they see their parent’s doing. Give your child a diaper bag and a few extras like tiny diapers, a set of wipes, bottles and Velcro bibs and they will have hours of fun simply packing and unpacking the diaper bag.

Don’t forget the dress up clothes. Putting on a play dress, complete with high heels, hat and purse sets the stage for looking her best when she is out on the town with her newborn. In her fantasy world, she wants to look her best as she stops on the way to allow other fantasy mom’s to ooh and aah over her carriage.

All of these play activities are important to discovering how the world works and to expand the imagination muscles that will help to form her ability to create a life of wonder and turn that into her own reality.

The Dream Dollhouse Holds the Imagination of Every Little Girl

Filed under: Toys — Tags: — Edie Mindell @ 8:51 am
by Edie Mindell

Little girls love to play pretend and they love their dolls, it’s a perfect gift I have a daughter that first began her love affair with a certain doll when she was only 18 months old. The relationship was a bit rocky at first as my little mommy pulled her baby’s hair and competed with the doll for bottle and binky use. Yet as the weeks passed the love my baby had for her baby grew to complete devotion.

She fondly named the baby doll Bah-Bah-Toe (don’t ask, I don’t know) and they have been inseparable now for several years. The cementing moments of the relationship occurred when Bah-Bah-Toe was given her own dollhouse. At first this was a humble dwelling that consisted of nothing more than a few cardboard boxes stacked and taped together.

At Christmas time that year, when my daughter was 2, the idea of getting her a brand new doll was down right blasphemous. Bah-Bah-Toe reigns supreme. One evening as my husband and I observed our little mommy lovingly reciting a story to her precious baby and tenderly tucking her into one of those cardboard rooms it struck us: Bah-Bah-Toe needs a real house.

Finding the perfect dollhouse for our daughter and her baby was not too difficult but was a decision that required some care. There are so many options out there. The first thing to consider is size. In our case the house needed to be able to inhabit the doll we already had. For those who may still need to populate the new residence the size concern is moot. Yet size is still an issue. Tall dollhouses pose a tipping threat and a climbing temptation for little ones. The last thing you want is the dollhouse to become memorable because of your child’s King Kong impression and the ensuing trip to the ER.

Dollhouses that are overly intricate, ornate or small similarly don’t work for toddlers. Those gorgeous Victorian ones are great, but a toddler will destroy it before the sun sets on Christmas day. Those with fine detail and small furnishings also pose a choking hazard. What a toddler needs is a dollhouse that isn’t too big, and isn’t too small. There are several varieties on the market that your daughter will be thrilled to call her own.

Many dollhouses come with just that: the house. Other brands come with a load of extras including play figures, furniture and clothing for the dolls. Price and your existing collection of accessories is a great way to decide what you need for your daughter’s Christmas wishes to come true. If you have many dolls already then a house by itself is probably the way to go. For those just starting out their doll collections a house that comes with extras will have a higher price tag up front, but when you factor in the cost of buying extra pieces separately, it might be the better deal.

Our little mommy has grown so much we hardly recognize the 2 year old who squealed with delight as she tucked a baby named Bah-Bah-Toe into her new house for the first time. Yet she still loves that doll, and her now not so new home.

Holiday Shopping Diva: Have a Plan B for your Holiday Shopping

Filed under: Toys — Tags: — Edie Mindell @ 12:01 pm
by Edie Mindell

Holiday Shopping Diva here with another dose of sanity to add to your holiday shopping excursions this year. One of the most difficult things about the whole holiday gift giving process is that even with the best-laid plans there is always a hitch. Sometimes this is a minor set back that can easily be rectified, other times it is not so minor.

What do you do when your toddler happens to set his heart on this season’s equivalent of the cabbage patch doll or tickle me Elmo toy? (Bloodshed is not an option.) Let’s face it, if your baby or toddler wants the season’s ‘it’ toy, you may need a plan B.

When you think your list might be laden with toys that will be snapped up before the boxes are off the delivery truck having a good offense is the only way to go. The only offense in shopping is to shop longer and harder than the other shoppers. This means you will need to start looking for that red wagon early in the season and with a great degree of frequency until it is secreted away for your child.

If shopping till you drop does not yield the perfect tricycle then a special order might be what you need. You might pay a bit more in shipping, but at least you will get the gift you are after. When implementing the special order plan B do not forget to allow time for shipping and check the internet as well as in-store ordering options.

One of the less popular tactics but one that might need to be used is simply knowing when to say when. Holiday shopping and gift giving should be fun especially when you are shopping for kids. When no other gift will possibly do this can be difficult but you do not need to abandon all hope of ever presenting your child with a beautiful step stool just her size. All that needs to be altered is the timeline. The mad rush to buy a holiday toy passes with the holiday season. To this end buy the gift and present it to your child for Valentine’s Day, a birthday or just as an out of the blue I’m thinking of you.

Plan B options also include the second choice gift. Sometimes the perfect gift that you just can’t find is also the one you thought of yourself. You know your child will just love a rocking horse, but she didn’t ask for it. In this case make a last minute gift substitution. Your child will never even know, and your sanity and stress level will decrease.

Don’t forget the power of the internet. Many gifts that are not to be found in a traditional store are available with very little hassle on-line! I have begun doing much of my holiday shopping online. It is great! Stay tuned for more internet shopping tips that will certainly spice up your holiday shopping.

Star Wars Vintage Toys: The Coolest Collectibles on the Market!

Filed under: Toys — Tags: — Jared Conley @ 11:14 pm
by Jared Conley

Everyone believes “their” markets are the “coolest” collectible toy markets, but most fingers point to vintage Hot Wheels, vintage Transformers, vintage Star Wars, and vintage Pez. Out of all of these, Star Wars vintage toys are arguably among the most valuable individually, though with the many Pez prototypes and variations available, Pez are probably more valuable in aggregate.

In 1977, Kenner produced the original line of twelve Star Wars action figures, and this entire line is extremely desirable to Star Wars enthusiasts, each netting over two thousand dollars if still in good condition and in their original packaging. The most valuable vintage toy is argued to be Vlix, a short-lived character who appeared in a Braziliam cartoon. Vlix nets well over six thousand dollars if in great condition.

Contributing to the valuation of these figures is the exclusivity of the license. For example, Kenner Canada, located in Ontario, held the license for Star Wars toys in Canada from 1977 until 1985, but only distributed about ten percent of the figures at that time. That, along with the fact that the Canadian lines were printed with bilingual packaging, adds a unique twist to those interested in the collectible value of Star Wars toys.

Another interesting collectible item available, but incredibly hard to come by, are figure prototypes. Prototypes and test products are very common in other markets, , but much rarer in the Star Wars market.

While many current Star Wars fans are young, and because there has been a glut of new licenses on the market, these newer figures will likely never attain the valuations that current vintage figures attained. For example, a recent release features Star Wars toys that morph from characters like Darth Vader into objects like the Death Star. These Transformers figures mashups are selling right now, but supply is also high, removing one of the valuation factors from the equation.

There are also other foreign releases, with the Japanese Star Wars toys being very unique, and therefore, very desirable and highly collectible. European toys are also popular and regularly confused with Canadian releases, due to their bilingual packaging. The easiest way to tell these releases apart is by viewing the address on the package, which will clearly indicate the country of origin.

With Star Wars toys, you have an excellent movie franchise, a devoted fan base, opportunities to locate unique figures, and much heavier demand than supply. These factors combine to lead many professional collectors to believe that Star Wars vintage action figures will retain their valuations for the long haul.

So dig in your attic, uncover that old Landspeeder or AT-AT Walker, and see if you have a collectible on your hands!
